This amazing Poster created by Leopoldo Metlicovitz, celebrated the opening of the Trans-Alpine "Simplon Tunnel" that made possible the first direct rail line between Milan and Paris.

Leopoldo Metlicovitz was born in Trieste, 1868 and died in Ponte Lambro, 1944. He was a celebrated  painter, illustrator and was one of the founders of “Futurismo”, a twentieth century artistic movement. He had influence on art movements that developed in other countries, particularly in Russia, France and USA. Futurismo explored every form of expression, from painting to sculpture, literature ( poetry and theater) , music , architecture , dance, photography, film and even gastronomy. The official name of the movement came about by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

International Exhibition of Milan was held from April 28 to November 11, 1906. The theme chosen was that of transport in celebration of the Simplon Tunnel which was inaugurated in February of 1905.

The Simplon Tunnel is a railway tunnel that connects Brig, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, through the Alps. It is straight except for short curves at either end.[1] It actually consists of two single-track tunnels built nearly 20 years apart. The first to be opened is 19,803 metres (64,970 ft) long; the second is 19,824 metres (65,039 ft) long, making it the longest railway tunnel in the world until the opening of the Daishimizu Tunnel in 1982.

President of the International Exhibition of 1906 was the financier and Milanese banker Cesare Mangili (1850-1917). 40 nations, 35,000 exhibitors participated at the International Exhibition of Milan, visitors were estimated at more than 5 million, a record figure for the time.
