This is a solemn and commanding artwork by George Frederick Watts. The night sky illuminated by a single star and Hope, represented by a young blindfolded woman, pressing her ear to seize the sound made from the last remaining string of her worn out lyre. The originally painted 1885, it could be considered bizarre that it should bear such a title as Hope, but the imagery is absolutely accurate. It tells us that in our bleakest moments there is always hope, a beautiful sentiment that has inspired many people.

Martin Luther King Jr. based a 1959 sermon, now known as Shattered Dreams, on the theme of the painting. Barack Obama was deeply moved by the painting when he was young.  He used "The Audacity of Hope" as the theme of his 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address and as the title of his book in 2006. He based his successful 2008 presidential campaign around the theme of "Hope".

About the artist:

George Frederic Watts was born in London on 23 February 1817. He was an English Victorian painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement. Symbolism of Art is related to the Gothic component of Romanticism. He has been quoted as saying:

"I paint ideas, not things."
