Kinhyoshi Yorin, Hero of the Suikoden - Vintage Wood Block Print Poster

Kinhyoshi yorin (Yang Lin), hero of the Suikoden (Water Margin) is dated between 1826 and 1830. A multi-Colour woodcut from Utagawa Kuniyoshi's series of woodblock prints illustrating the 108 Suikoden. Japanese translations of the Water Margin date at least to 1757, when the first volume was printed.

In 1827, the publisher Kagaya Kichibei commissioned Utagawa Kuniyoshi to produce a series of woodblock prints illustrating the 108 Suikoden. The 1827-1830 series, called “108 Heroes of the Suikoden” or “Tsuzoku Suikoden goketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori”, made Kuniyoshi famous. It created a trend for multi-coloured pictorial tattoos that covered the entire body from neck to mid-thigh. Following the phenomenal commercial success of the Kuniyoshi series, other 'ukiyo-e' artists were commissioned to produce prints of the Suikoden heroes.

About the Artist:

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a painter, illustrator, designer of wood block prints, 1797-1861. He was born in Edo, Japan, in 1797, and died in 1861. He completed his apprenticeship with Toyokuni from 1811 to 1814, his earliest works were prints of actors and beautiful women. Recognised as a prominent artist around the 1830’s to the 1850’s and he produced in excess of 20,000 print designs. His subjects were varied and included, landscapes and images of marine creatures, but his images of warriors made him famous.
