Buffalo Bill's Wild West, Cossacks - Vintage Poster
"Cossacks" performing on horseback, and portraits of Buffalo Bill and Nate Salsbury.
Buffalo Bill was famous for his Wild West Shows, these were travelling vaudeville performances in the United States and Europe. The original Wild West Show was Buffalo Bill's, it was first formed in 1883 and lasted until 1913. The shows introduced many western performers and personalities, and a romanticised version of the American frontier, to a wide audience with many different members.
In 1906 a ship sailed up the Adriatic Sea and docked at the port of Trieste, at that time a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The cargo consisted of a self sufficient travelling show complete in every way, from living quarters and all the equipment required to put on the “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World” as it was formally known.
The show was an outstanding success, cowboys on horseback, mock Indian battles and trick shooting entertained and left lasting impressions on audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. 19th century American ‘Wild West’ might have been embellished but it was all entertainment and not a history lesson.
The original colour lithograph poster was published in 1899.
