The Seated Clowness - Lautrec - Fine Art Poster
The Seated Clowness, 1896 (Mademoiselle Cha-u-kao) by Toulouse-Lautrec.
Toulouse-Lautrec was famous for his posters advertising Parisian cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge and he went on to produce deluxe editions of prints of Montmartre's performers. This print is one of the entertainer Cha-u-Kao. She performed as a dancer and clown at the Moulin Rouge and the Nouveau Cirque in the 1890s. Her stage name was also the name of a raunchy popular dance similar to the can-can, which came from the French words "chahut", translated to meaning 'noise' and "chaos".Cha-u-Kao became one of his favourite models and was depicted in a series of paintings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec was mesmerised by this woman who defied the rules by taking on what was the male profession of clowning and she was not afraid to openly declare that she was a lesbian.
