Vintage Photograph of the Sphinx of Giza

The wonderful Great Sphinx of Giza

No digital cameras in the 1800's! This magnificent photograph was taken by G. Lékégian & Cie.

The Great Sphinx is located in Giza where it guards the front of Khafra's pyramid large. It is a lion with a human head carved from a mound of natural rock.
The architecture, geology, and archaeology of the Sphinx and its related monuments provides the most convincing evidence that the Sphinx was built for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khafre during his period of influence, between 2520-2494 BC.For many years there have been legends told the Great Sphinx; curses, superstitions, mythological powers and mysteries. Some even believe there are hidden passageways or rooms below the Great Sphinx, but nothing has been found yet.

The Sphinx is only one element within a collection of structures that were built to serve the Cult of the departed King and the Sun Sod, “Re”. The structures consisted of; the Pyramid, Pyramid Temple, Causeway, Sphinx, Sphinx Temple, and Valley Temple. The three lower Khafre structures (Sphinx, Sphinx Temple, and Valley Temple) fit within the same archaeological sequence. It’s believed that the Sphinx might possibly have been intended to connect the King with the Sun God. The broad term for Sphinx in ancient Egyptian is “Shesep Ankh Atum”, translated means “Living image of Atum”, Atum immortalising both the Creator God and the Setting Sun.
