Engraving of Charles Darwin - Photographic Poster
An Engraving adapted from a photograph taken in 1847.
This line drawing adapted from a photograph appears in Vol. 1 of Life and a Letters of Charles Darwin edited by his son Francis Darwin and published in 1891.Darwin didn’t recover and had not often been in good health after returning from the Beagle Voyage. He died in 1882, aged 73, and ironically, was buried in Westminster Abbey. The official biography, edited by Darwin's son soon after his death and relies greatly on Darwin's own letters.
Charles Darwin's "The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection" made us rethink our place in the world. The concept that humans shared a common ancestor with apes was a challenge to the foundations of western civilisation. Darwin kept silent for 20 years before going public and was only half joking when he described writing his book 'On the Origin of Species' as 'like confessing a murder'. This is the story of one man’s struggle with the most fundamental idea of all time.
