Salvador Dali with Babou - Photographic Poster

Salvador Dali and Babou, his famous Ocelot, at St Regis Hotel NYC. 

Salvador Dali had an inclination for the eccentric and couldn’t help himself when it came to choosing a pet. Not content with dog or house cat, Dali desired an Ocelot, a dwarf wildcat. Dali loved his pet and named him Babou. He took him on strolls and on a cruise aboard the SS France, the last of the great ocean liners.

Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala famously lived at the St Regis Hotel in New York throughout the 1960s and 1970s every fall and winter. Other famous residents that maintained apartments at the hotel were; Marlene Dietrich, Alfred Hitchcock stayed in "his favourite" 5th floor suite many times and John Lennon produces a demo of 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' in his room at the St Regis.

On one occasion Dali took Babou into a New York City restaurant and placed him on the table. Needless to say diners were horrified, one woman in particular was terrified.  Dali spun a story that Babou was a just common cat that he painted to look interesting. Some people will believe anything?
