We Can Do It! Rosie the Riveter - Vintage Propaganda Poster

The famous "We Can Do It!" poster is often identified as Rosie the Riveter.

In 1942, J. Howard Miller, a Pittsburgh artist, was hired by the Westinghouse Company to create a series of posters for the World War II effort. One of his posters became the famous "We Can Do It!” This fine image, in later years would also become to be known as "Rosie the Riveter".

It’s believed that Miller based his "We Can Do It!" poster on a photograph taken by United Press International (UPI), of a young female war worker. The photograph was inaccurately reported as being of Michigan war worker Geraldine Hoff (later Doyle). It was later discovered that wrongly identified photo is of war worker Naomi Parker (later Fraley) and was taken at Alameda Naval Air Station in California. The "We Can Do It!" poster was exhibited exclusively to Westinghouse employees in the Midwest during in February 1943 over a two week period and then it disappeared for nearly forty years. It was a propaganda poster intended to motivate the employees of both sexes working at Westinghouse and not a recruitment poster for women workers. The name "Rosie" was not associated with the image during the war.

The poster captures a time in which there were more women in the workforce than ever before. And, the poster’s adoption as a feminist symbol gives it meaning for all women forever more..
