The illustration is one of several included botanical rare volume dated 1750.

The banana plant is a gigantic herb that grows from a rhizome, an underground stem, to form a soft, fleshy trunk 3–6 metres (10–20 feet) high.

This trunk is composed of the basal portions, a basal shoot is one that grows from a plant's root and becomes autonomous and can be replanted as a new plant and is genetically identical to the parent plant. These shoots grow from the stump, they are called suckers. A large flower pod, carrying numerous yellowish flowers protected by large purple-red bracts, emerges at the top of the trunk and bend downward to become bunches of 50 to 150 individual fruits. The individual fruits are the bananas and are grouped in clusters. Each trunk produces only one bunch of fruit and after a plant has fruited it is completely cut to the ground.  The plant is replaced by more suckers which arise from the rhizome at approximately six-month intervals and the life span of a single rhizome can continue for many years.
