In 1921, silent films transported American audiences to mysterious, faraway places and introduced an exotic, erotic characters to millions of fans.The Sheik was the movie that shot Rudolph Valentino to super-stardom. The movie was based on an infamous 1919 pot-boiler by E.M. Hull, and the precursor to the contemporary romance novel. Written in 1919, Edith Maude Hull's fictional "The Sheik" inspired a sub-genre of desert romance, in which hot, swarthy Arabs kidnap reckless white women.

Paramount acquired the rights and understood that that the material needed to handled cautiously if it was to pass the sober censor boards. The main problem was not in content but in casting. Who could the role go to? The exotic Sheik who abducts a sophisticated woman across the desert sands?

Rudolph Valentino was loved by women across the country, the sexy Italian immigrant was unhappy with his contract at Metro Studios (the forerunner to MGM Studios) and signed on with Paramount. Valentino was billed as a featured player below the leading lady, Agnes Ayres.
