Walt Whitman 1887 - Photographic Poster

A Photographic Portrait of Walt Whitman taken in 1887 by George C. Cox.

George C. Cox published around seven images for Whitman and this particular one was said to have been Whitman's favourite. Whitman sent a copy to Alfred Lord Tennyson in England.

Walt Whitman, a distinguished American poet born on May 31, 1819 in West Hills, New York.  His verse collection 'Leaves of Grass' is a milestone in the history of American literature. Considered one of America's most influential poets and in 1855 he self-published the collection Leaves of Grass. Its publication it was considered highly controversial at the time. Whitman died on March 26, 1892 in Camden, New Jersey.
