Holy cards or prayer cards are small devotional pictures that were mass produced used by the faithful and collected by school children worldwide. They typically illustrated religious scenes or saints and the reverse side often included a prayer. The distribution of these holy cards was important objects to own and part of the Roman Catholic culture.

June is the month devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Love is related with the image of a heart. The heart signifies affection a pouring out of emotion and is the most powerful images of Christ’s love, his Sacred Heart. The image of the Sacred Heart originated in the 14th century and was taken seriously as Christ’s claim to humanity.

The firm that produced this Holy Card is known as Carl Poellath and was founded in the 18th century, the family-owned company and still exists today. During the period of industrialisation in 1852 the enterprise grew and the factory employed up to 300 workers. From 1836-1901 the production range expanded with the introduction of religious articles such as rosaries, religious travel memories, holy pictures and religious brochures and sheets.

The irony in the contradictory shift in production from Religious Articles to Military Badges during 1914 – 1918 is perhaps the reason for the business’s longevity. The company produced badges for commemorative Nazi events and the Third Reich merit cross.
