Photographic Poster - 2 Carousel Horses
I can remember my father taking me to a carousel at Melbourne Zoo.
Did you know that merry-go-rounds in the UK usually turn clockwise, while Mainland Europe and the USA typically spin in a anticlockwise?
Hand carved wooden carousel horses are considered examples of art and horses in original condition can sell for thousand dollars.
"Merry-go-round" and “Carousel” are words that have the same meaning. The very early carousels were nothing like what we imagine today. They were usually driven by horse or a person pulling a rope. Back then Carousels were small manually operated unsophisticated contraptions.
By the mid 1800’s the steam powered platform carousel was invented. Carved animals and chariots were added so that participants could travel around in a circle sitting on a suspended circular floor which hung from the centre pole. Like everything else, steam changed everything forever. The advent of steam, like everything else, changed everything.
