This magnificent Caricature illustration of Uncle Sam and the Pope.

Original artwork by Udo J.Keppler and published by Keppler & Schwarzmann in New York and the Illustration was published as a Centrefold in Puck, Volume 45 in March 1899.

The topic of this magnificent Illustration is Religion and Politics, it shows Pope Leo XIII climbing the Washington Dome in the U.S. Capitol. He's carrying a cross and intending on replacing the Stars and Stripes Flag with it. Uncle Sam yelling out to him "come down from there".

The caption at the bottom of the print quotes:

Uncle Sam: "What are you going to do up there?"
The Pope: "I thought it was time to nail this cross over the dome".
Uncle Sam: "Well, you come down! We've got a figure up there that will last for some time yet!"
