Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Combined - Vintage Circus Poster

Ringling Brothers Circus and Barnum & Bailey Circus were famous and travelled the United States for many years.

Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey merged with the Ringling Brothers in 1919.  
1919 saw the first appearance of the "Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows" New York City. The Advertising Posters declared, "The Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows and the Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth are now combined into one record-breaking giant of all exhibitions."
The Great Depression hit the Circus hard and struggled to stay in business during the 1930’s.

Travel restrictions were imposed throughout the USA during WW II and President Roosevelt granted a relaxation of the rules so that the Circus could operate using the national rail network in 1942. A new marketing poster depicting a Threatening Circus Tiger was also released that year.

"The Greatest Show on Earth" film, Produced by Cecil B. DeMille and released by Paramount Pictures in 1952 give an accurate picture of  the travelling show through the set-up and breakdown of a number of performances. The film starred Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, James Stewart, and Emmett Kelly.
