The Cocoa Tree is gourd-like plant that bears yellow lumpy fruit, this illustration is entitled 'Merian's Drawings of Surinam Insects..'; and includes examples of pupa, caterpillar, chrysalis, and moth, depicting the life cycle of the insect Watercolour, touched with pen and grey ink, over black chalk, on vellum.

Maria Sibylla Merian was a Naturalist, an Entymologist and a Botanical Illustrator and is rated as being one of the greatest botanical artists. She is best known for her illustrations of plants and insects that she made from her expeditions to the tropical country of Suriname on the north eastern coast of South America. Her skilful observation and research combined with her artistic talents was a window into the world of 18th century science.

Maria Sibylla suffered a stroke in 1715 and as a result was partially paralysed. She died in Amsterdam on January 13, 1717 and on the day of her death a large number of her paintings were sold to a representative of Peter the Great for his new natural history collection in St. Petersburg, Russia.
