La Riviera Italienne - Vintage Italian Poster
The Italian Riviera at Portofino from a terrace above the coastline.
An 1920 Italian travel poster by Mario Borgoni.
Portofino's only access was by boat or track via donkey. In 1870 an Englishman, Lord Henry Herbert, visited and decided to build a villa 'L'Altachiara' above the town. In the decades following, Portofino gradually became well-known to the aristocracy, and by the 1920's holiday makers from Britain and Germany became regular visitors.
By 1935 the Province of Genoa provided architectural protection, thus preserving the historic port frontage that we all know so well today.
