SS Maheno Wreck, Queensland - Australian Poster

The Maheno washed ashore on Fraser Island by a cyclone in 1935.

SS Maheno was an ocean liner owned by the Union Company of New Zealand and operated in the Tasman Sea between Sydney and Melbourne via ports in New Zealand and Hobart, Tasmania, from 1905 until 1935. She also made frequent  voyages between Sydney and Vancouver and was used as a hospital ship in the English Channel during World War One. During the Second World War she was used for target bombing practice by the Royal Australian Air Force.

She was taken out of service in 1935 and sold to Japan for scrap. Bound for a Japanese wrecking yard and while being towed to Japan she was hit with a tropical storm while being towed through Queensland waters. The Maheno met a stormy end and was washed ashore on Fraser Island by a cyclone in 1935.

Today, SS Maheno is Fraser Islands famous disintegrating wreck and remains as a popular tourist attraction.
