W.C. Fields, David Copperfield - Hollywood Photographic Poster

"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with."

Born William Claude Dukenfield in 1880, he was better known as W. C. Fields. On account of a preponderance of made-up studio publicity, as well as Fields’s own fondness for lying about his past, most biographies of Fields are inaccurate. He died on Christmas Day, 1946, strangely fitting for a non-believer who once confessed to be studying the Bible “for loopholes.”

As an American comedian, actor, juggler and writer W.C Fields' comic facade was of someone who detested humanity, had a dislike, distrust of people and was a hard-drinking egotist. He also remained a sympathetic character regardless of his grumbling disapproval for dogs and children. His familiar trademarks were his raspy drawl and pompous vocabulary. His portrayal of this character in films and radio was, and still to this day remains so strong that it identifies with Fields himself.

The original cast for the role of Mr. Micawber was Charles Laughton and after two days of work, his performance was so disliked in the dailies that he was replaced. At the time it was said that "he looked as though he were about to molest the child."  W. C. Fields was recommended for the part and was borrowed from Paramount Pictures. A clause in Fields' contract stated that he needed act the part in a British accent. Learning the lines was difficult enough so he read off cue cards and consequently speaks in his own drawl in the role. His defence was: "My father was an Englishman and I inherited this accent from him! Are you trying to go against nature?!"

This is the only film W.C. Fields made where he doesn't ad lib. He played the character in a clear-cut manner.  The director George Cukor said that when ever Fields make suggestions for visual pieces, e.g.  accidentally dipping his quill in a teacup instead of an inkwell, it was always within the consideration of the character. As a result the movie, “David Copperfield was one of the finest performances of that year.
