Steve McQueen, "King of Cool"

Terence Steven "Steve" McQueen (1930 – 1980) was one of the most admired and highly paid Hollywood actors of the 1960s and '70s. Known as “The King of Cool", his "anti-hero" character made him the highest paid Hollywood actor and a top box-office draw of the 1960s and 1970s. He was known to be confrontational with directors and producers, but his popularity placed him in high demand and enabled him to dictate large salaries.

He was celebrated for his rugged good looks and cool, tough guy personality. His unforgettable films include The Great Escape (1963), Bullitt (1968), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), The Great Escape. In 1971 and The Getaway (1972).

He married Ali McGraw in 1973; she once described McQueen as a "combination of farm boy and street tough," and it was this mysterious mixture that helped him leave a permanent impression in film.

Whenever McQueen agreed to do a film he often demanded free stuff in bulk from studios, electric razors, jeans, and other items. It was later discovered that he donated the items to the Boys Republic Reformatory School where he spent time in his teen years. McQueen made regular visits to the school and spent spend time with the students, frequently to play pool and speak about his life experiences. Later in life he believed that the experience changed his life, saying, "I would have ended up in jail or something. I was a wild kid."
