The Uncle Sam poster was conceived for a purpose; to recruit personnel for the first world war.

“Uncle Sam is Calling YOU.. ENLIST in the Navy!”

Uncle Sam mesmerising eyes and finger point directly at the viewer:

”I want you in the Navy and I want you now!”

This 1917 lithographic poster was Western Litho. Co. Los Angeles and was inspired from Alfred Leete’s 1914 image of Kitchener.  This was a time before radio and when the poster was uniquely compelling. Propaganda played a significant role in the war efforts of WW I and II and today the humble poster has been replaced with a formidable Twitter.
