Wake up America - Vintage WW1 Poster
Wake up America! Civilisation calls every man, woman and child!
This magnificent Poster was created by James Montgomery Flagg in 1917 and illustrates (Columbia ) a woman dressed in Stars & Stripes, symbolising America asleep. The United States spent 30 months in neutrality before entering World War I on April 6, 1917 and this Poster helped sound the alarm.
James Montgomery Flagg created many unforgettable WWI images and in this poster his model for Columbia was the famous actress Mary Arthur. A simple but very powerful message; while America/she slumbers against the column, a symbol of western civilisation, threatening storm clouds gather round in the background.
