Join the Navy - Vintage WW1 Poster
A fine example of a WW I Navy Recruitment Poster.
'Join the Navy, the service for fighting men' Poster was created by Richard Fayerweather Babcock for the US Navy in 1917. Babcock was an Illustrator and a recognised American Artist born in Denmark, Iowa 1887. A student of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Herron Art Institute of Indianapolis, and in Munich, Germany. The “Join the Navy” poster Babcock suggests a reckless euphoria associated with the courageous men “fighting men” as the theme of this Recruitment Poster.
The disconcerting combination of life and death in Babcock’s poster may have inspired Stanley Kubrick’s movie, Dr. Strangelove (1964).
