Pan American launch its first passenger flights across the Pacific by carrying nine passengers across the largest ocean in the world in October 1936. Passengers paid, at the time an exorbitant $1,400 for the return-trip from San Francisco to Manila. Not long after establishing the service to Hong Kong and Manila, routes to Australia and New Zealand were opened up. Pan American's Clippers soon began flying regular passenger services to New Zealand in March 1937, flying via the Kingman Reef south of Hawaii and American Samoa.

Pan American was the first to make the Pacific crossings by way of Hawaii and other islands. The first Martin Clippers were replaced in 1941 by larger Boeing Clippers.
November, 1945, saw Pan American Airlines resume commercial operations with Boeing Clippers which were leased to the Navy during the war. 

The Clipper facilitated the emergence of the exciting international air travel era which allowed Pan American Airlines to dominate aviation around the world. Pan Am was identified with glamour and in 1958, commenced its transatlantic jet service between New York and Paris. The Boeing 707 carried 141 first and economy class passengers at a cruising speed of 607 miles per hour, a staggering almost four times faster than the Clipper and carried six times as many passengers.
